Speaking in Faces: Printing Project Schedule

IMG_0807Great news! The VABC project, Speaking in Faces, has been awarded a $4,500 grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to complete this historic publication!

Speaking in Faces is a type specimen book of the VABC collection that will function on completion as a basic resource to letterpress printing, typography, and the treasures of the collection: more than 350 cases of metal type in serif and sans serif faces, among a wide diversity of other display fonts, dingbats, and wood type. We are completing a visible catalog of this resource for the collection that will continue to be a centerpiece of the VABC creative community and will inspire the next generation of artists, book makers, printers, and typographers. A re-printable offset edition will be created based on the fine print book that will serve as a basic introduction to type and letterpress at VABC.

YOU ARE INVITED to join this project by helping in the effort to complete type specimens–those are printed samples of all the characters and symbols in the typeface!

Have you always wanted to know how to set metal type? Or have you wanted to freshen up on it? Now is your chance. VABC is offering a series of free, drop-in sessions printing traditional specimens to help bring the project home. Learn alongside skilled typesetters and watch this book come to life–you’ll even be named in the colophon and receive an offset copy of the completed project on completion (due December 2016).
