Infinite Stakes: Cards Project Details

posted by: Kristin Adolfson

IFConcept: Participating artists will choose a theme from the list and interpret the theme as a whole/face/major arcana/ace “card”—no suits, sixes, or tens—that is a representation of its concept. One way of thinking of it was “a deck of ideas” and it should be oriented to the present or future. One approach would be for the artist to answer the question: “What does this concept mean in the twenty-first century?”

Card size: 7” x 4.5”. Cards will be available 2-up or cut individually.

Orientation: Vertical (portrait).

Margin: 0.25”

Number in your edition: Print 80.

Title Placement: The theme you choose should be one word or phrase (some themes have several different words, you should select one). Title should appear in black in on the bottom of the card, centered above the 0.25” margin baseline.

Color palette: Card should use either a HOT (yellow, orange, red) or COOL (violet, blue, green) palette; intermixed inks and use of tints/shades (adding white/black) are fine. The individual artist will decide if their theme and image will be a hot or cool one.

Process restrictions: Open, so long as printing method is used. No collaged or attached material…card should remain planar. Print only on one side – a universal card back will be printed on all cards.

Deadline: Monday, August 31.

If you would like to choose a theme (please start with two) peruse the list below, and comment on this post with your choice. We will update the main post to reflect the reserved themes once a week.

  • These are all awesome suggestions! My favorite so far is “Infinite Stakes: A Contemporary Cartomancy Deck.” I like the urgency/evocativeness of the first phrase–it makes me perk up my ears–and the clarity/functionality of the second. “Infinite stakes,” for me, is the perfect way to connote the future and all the anxieties surrounding it–can we save ourselves from ourselves? And “A Contemporary Cartomancy Deck,” well, that’s just a spot-on description of what we’re doing.

I really like the phrase “Parlous Beasts,” but would argue that it doesn’t quite fit the project as well as some of the others. I think of a bestiary when I hear that phrase and expect that the cards are going to be animal-themed. And it also sounds antiquated–in a beautiful way, no doubt–as opposed to forward-looking. But that’s just me. Others may disagree!

“A Deck of Our Days” is awfully pretty too, as a phrase…

  • My current vote goes to “Infinite Stakes: A Contemporary Cartomancy Deck.” I like the idea of using an evocative title with a subtitle that really describes the project.

And I wanted to raise the argument that Catherine has already so eloquently made. Thus, I will just second her concern: that “infinite stakes” is forward-looking whereas “parlous beasts” — nice as it is — doesn’t really go with the contemporary theme since the word parlous is antiquated/obsolete.

  • I would like to work with “Soul” & “Heart”
    or Heart & Soul!

  • I’ll take
    Abyss (Oblivion)
    And
    Dreams

  • I’ll take “Nature” and “Sensuality.”

  • I’ll take hope and rivalry.

  • I’ll take Individuality, control and must round off my set with Communion.

Infinite Stakes: A Contemporary Cartomancy Deck excites me.

  • I would like to take “Barrier (Challenge)” and “Protection.”

  • In anticipation of the upcoming card project (Infinite Stakes),

We’ll need a (member) resource for preparing backing blocks, for those who will be printing on the Vandercook from unmounted linoleum (or other thin materials).

I can get a 4X4′ sheet of 3/4″ Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) but need someone to cut it down to blocks of exact size of cards…
So if you have access to a table, radial or band saw (and with skills and/or resources to use same) please let me know…

    ALSO…
If you’re planning to print, on the Vandercook, from any material that is not type high (.918″) please let me know so we can plan accordingly.

    Thanks
    Garrett

  • Hey, may I take “grief” and “sex”? Hope so.
